Commencement 2025 FAQs
What is the departmental ceremony?
The departmental ceremony is where graduates of a particular department can be individually recognized, have their names called, and walk onto the stage to receive their diploma. Departmental ceremonies are separate from the University Commencement Ceremony held at Autzen Stadium. You should visit the main Commencement website for information about attending the University ceremony.
Do graduating students or guests need to RSVP to attend? Do we need tickets?
No, all students expecting to graduate this year are automatically included in the department ceremony. RSVPs are not required for students or their guests. Tickets are not required to attend. However, graduating students should confirm their ceremony details by May 2 at the link at the top of this page.
When should I arrive?
Graduating students should arrive no later than 30 minutes before the ceremony start time. Graduates should check in with staff upon arrival to receive further instructions. Guests should arrive and find seats before the start of the ceremony.
How long will the ceremony be?
The actual length of the ceremony will depend on the number of participating graduates. Expect the ceremony to last approximately 1.5 hours. A reception with light refreshments will take place immediately following the ceremony.
What should I bring to the ceremony?
The only thing graduates need to bring is their regalia, which they should be wearing when they arrive. Items like phones, wallets, and keys will need to remain with you or your guests during the ceremony; there is no storage for personal belongings. Therefore, it is not recommended that you bring large bags, heavy cameras, or other bulky items.

Students found in possession of prohibited substances could be subject to sanctions including, but not limited to, confiscation of the substance(s), being denied access to commencement activities, or notification to law enforcement regarding illegal substances.
Can I bring guests? Is there a limit on guests?
Yes—graduating students may bring guests to the department ceremony. There is no official limit on the number of guests, but seating is first-come, first-served.
Are there ADA accommodations?
The venue is ADA accessible, and seating will be designated for wheelchair users and their companions. If graduating students or their guests need additional accommodation, please contact ASU5@uoregon.edu as soon as possible.
Is the ceremony indoors? What happens if there is bad weather?
The ceremony is indoors and will proceed, regardless of weather. Only severe weather such as lightning or high winds would cause a delay or cancellation. The reception following the ceremony is planned for outdoors but will be moved to a nearby indoor location, if needed.
Will there be food? Will there be water?
A reception with cake and refreshments will take place immediately following the ceremony. Limited gluten-free options will be available. Bottled water will be available at the ceremony, and there are bottle refill stations.
Will the department ceremony be recorded or livestreamed?
No—the department does not currently have the resources for recording or livestreaming the ceremony. The University Commencement Ceremony at Autzen will be livestreamed and can be viewed from the main Commencement web page.
Will I get my photo taken?
Professional photographers from GradImages will be present to take photos of each graduate when they go on stage. You and your family will have the option of purchasing photos after the ceremony. Please be sure you provide an email address and permanent mailing address for this purpose.
