Advisory Board

The WSCR Advisory Board oversees the creation and assessment of WSCR program objectives to emphasize career readiness; contemporary rhetorical studies and antiracist work; and the interdisciplinary focus of the minor. It also reviews and proposes curriculum and experiential learning opportunities that innovate, build on updated objectives, increase core education connections, and draw on the expertise of current English Department faculty.

Two members from the English Department, one career faculty and one tenure-line faculty:

Two members from the broader campus community:

  • Lee Rumbarger, TEP Director (2022-2025)
  • Lori Schontz, SOJC faculty (2022-2025)

Two student members (undergraduate or graduate level):

  • Genevieve Pfeiffer, graduate student (2024)  
  • Ava Magnabosco, WSCR minor student (2024)  

Two at-large members:

  • Trond Jacobsen, Clark Honors College (2022-2025)
  • Falyn Edwards, Advising (2022-2025)

Membership

The WSCR Advisory Board shall consist of a total of nine members as follows:

  • The director
  • Two members from the English Department, one career faculty and one tenure-line faculty
  • Two members from the broader campus community
  • Two student members (undergraduate or graduate level)
  • Two at-large members (could be from English, campus, or broader community)

The board will also frequently consult with select community members. The minor will continue to be housed in and follow the course and curricular approval processes of the English Department.

Appointments: 2 years, staggered; 1-year student appointments.

Members of the board will be selected by the Head of English and the Director of the minor. In selecting members, preference will be given to individuals who help ensure broad representation across the following areas to support proposed development work (see below):

  • The current version of the minor
  • Writing – especially teaching writing for different purposes and audiences
  • Rhetoric – especially cultural and/or critical race rhetoric
  • Critical reasoning – especially moving beyond white, Western ways of “reasoning”
  • Community/civic partnerships and engagement
  • Units/areas on campus that draw the most minors (SOJC; Public Policy, Society, and Identity Pathway) as well as areas identified for growth (Scientific Discovery and Sustainability Pathway)
  • Core education requirements
  • Career readiness and experiential learning
  • Program assessment

Board Charge

  1. Oversee creation and assessment of WSCR program objectives to emphasize career readiness, contemporary rhetorical studies and antiracist work, and the interdisciplinary focus of the minor.
  2. Review and propose curriculum and experiential learning opportunities that innovate, build on updated objectives, increase core education connections, and draw on the expertise of current English Department faculty.
    • Identify and develop new courses in each of the three areas of the minor
    • Develop “pathways”: community literacy, SOJC, core ed satisfying, etc.
    • Develop experiential learning opportunities for WSCR minors
  3. Increase and maintain knowledge about the minor across campus and in the community to build enrollment, seek interdisciplinary/cross unit partnerships, and support experiential learning.
  4. Develop an internal governance policy for the board.
