The faculty in the Creative Writing Program are filling the shelves in local bookstores with tantalizing reads for every interest, from poetry to memoirs and graphic novels to speculative fiction. As creatives and teachers, they practice what they preach.
“I’m so proud of the work our faculty does in creative writing and how their work and teaching inspire our students to embrace storytelling ,” said Jason Brown, professor and head of the Creative Writing Program.
Students interested in creative writing have graduate and undergraduate options to choose from in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon. The Creative Writing Program is a two-year, fully funded residency in which Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students concentrate in either poetry or fiction. At the undergraduate level, students can choose from two tracks for undergraduate study: a minor in creative writing, with workshops, seminars and literature courses, as well as the Walter and Nancy Kidd Creative Writing Workshops, a unique yearlong studio experience in which students pursue their passion for creative writing in small classes with the support of peers and a graduate mentor.
“Creative writing as a pursuit has grown in popularity in the last 35 years, and our program has benefitted from that interest,” said Brown. “We are an elite program whose faculty and graduates are producing some of the most important literature of our time.”
