Design your own Fieldwork Opportunity

If you have a specific interest or opportunity in mind that isn’t on our list of pre-approved internship sites, consider designing your own fieldwork experience. This is a great way to tailor your internship to your academic or career goals—while gaining meaningful experience.

To complete the Internship requirement, total internship hours must equate to 120 real-world hours, and students must register for 1-4 P/NP credits that will be supervised by the Disability Studies Program Director, Brian Trapp.

All experiences must be pre-approved by the Disability Studies Program Director, Brian Trapp.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Designing Your Own Internship

  1. Set up a meeting with one of our Fieldwork Advisors, Brian or Jade, to discuss potential opportunities.
Meeting with Brian or Jade will be your first step in getting approval for a site that is not included in the Pre-approved Opportunities list.

Once you have had a meeting with a Fieldwork Advisor...

  2. Make contact with your site and confirm the details
Reach out to your proposed site to discuss whether they are open to having an intern. You'll need to confirm:
    • They can offer you enough hours (30 hours per credit; 120 hours for 4 credits).
    • The tasks and responsibilities you would take on.
    • That you’ll be working directly with disabled individuals.
    • That the site has someone who can actively supervise your work and sign off on your forms
  3. Request Approval
Once you’ve confirmed the above, email Brian Trapp (
trapp@uoregon.edu) and copy Jade Fraley (jadef@uoregon.edu) with the subject line: Fieldwork Site Approval Request.

    In your email, include:

    • The name of the site or organization.
    • Your supervisor’s name, contact information, and their role.
    • A description of the internship work you plan to do.

  4. Complete Required Forms
After your site is approved by Prof. Trapp, visit our
Internship Forms page here and complete the necessary paperwork to finalize your fieldwork site
