Scholarships and Awards

There are multiple scholarships available for language study, travel, and students who show strong merit within the University of Oregon and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.


Noriko Fujii Memorial Japanese Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded each spring term to students in JPN 203, who plan to continue to third-year Japanese.

Eligibility:

  • Must be in JPN 203 and have enrolled for JPN 301
  • Must show academic merit
  • Should show financial need
  • Should have strong interest in furthering their knowledge of the Japanese language and culture beyond third-year courses and after graduation

Award: The funds can be used to cover all standard educational expenses including tuition, fees, books, miscellaneous supplies, room and board.

How to apply: Application details will be made available to JPN 203 students during spring term. Payments will be made in the subsequent fall term, once the applicant has enrolled for JPN 301.


Japan America Friendship Fund Scholarship

Multiple scholarships are available to students who are planning to study in Japan during the summer and the coming school year. This is a travel scholarship intended to assist students who will study Japanese language and culture in Japan.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Japanese America Friendship Fund Scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Candidates must be US citizens
  • Candidates must be majoring or minoring in Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures 
  • Candidates must have applied to study abroad in Japan for the summer or for the coming school year. When you apply for this scholarship, it isn’t necessary to have been accepted yet.

Award: $2,000-$3,000

How to apply: Students should submit an application form and a language reference form filled out by the instructor of the candidate’s most recently completed (and graded) Japanese language class. The application deadline is in April.

Japan America Friendship Fund Scholarship


Freeman Internship Fellowships

The Freeman Foundation seeks to assist colleges and universities in expanding opportunities for US students to work as interns in East and Southeast Asia. These internship fellowships provide stipends up to student interns to offset travel and living expenses overseas.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Freeman Internship Fellowship, candidates must:

  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Be enrolled at the UO as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student
  • Be in good academic standing; GPA 2.75
  • Have applied to and/or been accepted into an internship in East or Southeast Asia through IE3 Global Internships, or through connections with UO departments, UO faculty, or UO alumni
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a strong interest in East and/or Southeast Asia

Award: Up to $5,000. Award amounts will depend on the length of the internship, location, budget, and other internship support.

How to apply: To be considered for a Freeman Internship Fellowship, candidates must submit a completed application by the deadlines below:

  • November 22 (for winter and spring)
  • February 22 (for spring and summer)
  • April 22 (for summer)
  • July 22 and September 22 (for fall)

Freeman Internship Fellowships


Joan Bowman Siegel and Mark Siegel Travel Fund

This scholarship makes awards available to undergraduate students participating in UO-sponsored study abroad programs or internships in Asia, with a preference for Japan. 

Eligibility:

  • Must be a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate at the UO in any major through the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Must be ultimately accepted in a UO-sponsored study abroad or internship program in Asia, with preference given to programs or internships in Japan
  • Must have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA
  • Preference will be given to domestic students (US citizens and residents)

Award: $1,000-$2,000

How to apply: Selection is based on academic merit and a well-completed scholarship application. Scholarship applications open approximately four weeks prior to the scholarship deadline. There are three application deadlines:

  • Winter quarter: November 1
    Spring quarter/semester: November 1
    Summer, fall quarter/semester, academic year: March 10

Siegel Travel Award


Junji Numata International Scholarship in Honor of Dave Frohnmayer

Annually, up to five scholarships will be awarded to students accepted for participation in GEO-sponsored study abroad or international internship programs in Japan during the academic year. This award is not available for summer programs. Selection is based on academic merit and a well-completed scholarship application. Preference will be given to applicants with previous college-level Japanese language coursework. The GEO Scholarship Committee will select the recipients.

Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking graduate or undergraduate student at the UO
  • Must ultimately be accepted to participate in a GEO-sponsored study abroad or internship program in Japan
  • Must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA

Award: $1,000-$1,500

How to apply: Scholarship applications open approximately four weeks prior to the scholarship deadline. Scholarship deadlines are:

  • Winter quarter: November 1
    Spring semester/quarter: November 1
    Fall Semester, fall quarter, academic year: March 10

Junji Numata International Scholarship


Wegmann Scholarship for Chinese Studies

This scholarship supports undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Chinese and accepted to a UO-sponsored study abroad program in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.

Preference will be given to Oregon residents and Chinese majors.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate standing
  • Study of Chinese
  • Academic merit
  • Students must have completed at least one year of Chinese language study
  • Students must be accepted to a UO-sponsored study abroad program in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan for a minimum of six months of study

Award: $1,000-$2,000. The scholarship may be used to assist students with all standard educational expenses including tuition, fees, books, miscellaneous supplies, room and board, and travel associated with the study abroad experience.

How to apply: Application deadline for the fall semester/quarter or the academic year is April 10.

Wegmann Scholarship for Chinese Studies


McNair Scholars Program

The McNair Scholars Program (TRiO) prepares qualified juniors and seniors for graduate study leading to PhD degrees. UO McNair Scholars receive comprehensive support to earn undergraduate degrees, complete research projects in their fields of study, and apply to graduate schools. The program’s limited size provides a close-knit community while helping students gain a broad understanding of research and university culture.
