Graduate Admissions

An applicant for admission to the master's program should have completed an undergraduate major in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language, literature, or linguistics, or have equivalent experience.

An applicant for admission to the doctoral program should have completed an MA degree in Chinese, Japanese or Korean language, literature, or linguistics, or have equivalent experience.

The application process is the same for both master's and doctoral candidates.

Admission Requirements

The University of Oregon graduate program application process is online. The deadline for applications is Friday, January 3. The online application and all the supporting materials, including recommendation letter uploads need to be completed and received by January 3. New students are typically admitted to the program for fall term. A departmental faculty committee will review the completed file and notify the applicant of its decision by April 15.

A non-refundable $70 fee for domestic applicants or a $90 fee for international students is collected by the Office of Admissions for the Graduate Admissions Application.

The application is divided into four parts:

  • Personal info
  • Residency info
  • Educational info
  • Departmental application

While completing the application you will be required to upload a few materials:

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The GRE Test is required for all applicants. There is no minimum score requirement. Applicants should take the test in time for the official results to arrive to the university prior to January 1. The online application is self-reporting; however, official GRE scores need to be sent to the UO (Institution Code 4846).

English Language Proficiency Requirement

This is required for non-native English-speaking applicants only. Non-native speakers of English who have earned a bachelor's or higher from a regionally accredited US institution or a high school diploma in an English-speaking country are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

  • TOEFL: UO requires a minimum score of 575 for the paper-based test or 88 for the Internet-based (IBT) version. The online application is self-reporting; however, official scores need to be sent to the University of Oregon (institution code 4846) and to the East Asian Languages and Literatures department (department code 29).
  • IELTS: UO requires a minimum score of 7.0 overall band score. The online application is self-reporting; however, official scores need to be sent to the University of Oregon (institution code 4846).

Statement of Purpose

Upload your 750-word, PDF-formatted statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should address:

  • The applicant’s specific academic preparation or experience
  • All areas of interests
  • Career goals
  • Why you would like to attend the University of Oregon
  • (Doctoral applicants only) your potential research questions

Letters of Recommendation

Identify three persons familiar with your academic experience and your ability to carry out independent research. The online application requests contact information (name, position, institution, telephone number, and email) for each recommender. Upon submission of your online application, each recommender will be notified via email and provided with instructions on how to respond.

Transcripts

At the time of application, applicants must submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended, including the University of Oregon. Unofficial transcripts are uploaded as part of the online application. Applicants who accept their offer of admission and matriculate must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities from which they received a bachelor’s degree or higher. Detailed information about submitting official transcripts is available here.

Writing Sample

Upload a writing sample from a course that shows on the transcript. International students must submit a sample in English and may submit an additional sample in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

Other Application Materials

Non-native Chinese, Japanese, or Korean speakers must provide evidence of language proficiency in their concentration language to evaluate the applicant’s ability to serve as a graduate teaching fellow in a language course.

Minimum ACTFL scale of Intermediate High: Candidates may submit formal testing results through ACTFL or applicants may be given an oral interview via telephone or in person by an Eastern Asian languages and literatures faculty member. The graduation requirement is Advanced. Those who are admitted into the program with Intermediate–High level are required to take language courses until they reach the Advanced level.

Financial support verification: US government regulations require that the University of Oregon verify the availability of sufficient financial support for non-immigrant students before a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019) can be issued. International students must submit supporting financial documents, e.g., Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) appointment contract, scholarship award letter, and/or bank statements, to the Office of Admissions when applying. Estimated expenses can be found on the Graduate Student website.

Students planning to be sponsored by an agency, government or other sponsor should have proof of financial support sent from the sponsoring agency, e.g., a letter from the sponsor and copies of the sponsor’s bank statement.

Financial verification documents can be emailed to UO Global or mailed to:
