Why Study East Asian Linguistics at the UO?

The East Asian Languages and Literatures Department is one of a very few in the nation that offers a complete East Asian linguistics program, covering Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Students may elect to specialize in Chinese, Japanese or Korean linguistics, in Chinese, Japanese or Korean language pedagogy, or alternatively, they may undertake cross-linguistic studies.

Graduate Programs

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers programs of study leading to an MA or PhD degree in East Asian languages and literatures. Students may choose to specialize in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean literary studies.

Travel and Study Around the World

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literature prepares students for the future of global citizenship and the workforce. Many of our students spend time traveling and living in another culture. We offer study abroad opportunities in all areas of East Asia, including China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

EALL faculty’s expertise covers major sub-fields of linguistics and applied linguistics. In our research and teaching, we emphasize functional and empirical approaches to the study of language structure and use. UO is also home to a very strong Linguistics department, and students may augment their programs by drawing upon its course offerings.

EALL, LINGUISTICS - For Graduate-Professional Student Appreciation Week in 2026, CAS gradate students share their experiences of what makes their experience special at CAS. CAS is home to 1,295 graduate students: 307 master’s and 959 PhD. With April 6-10 Graduate-Professional Student Appreciation Week, CAS reached out to some of its graduate students to hear how about their experiences at the college.
FRENCH, ITALIAN, CHINESE — Three professors in the College of Arts and Sciences received Oregon Humanities Center Fellowships for 2026–27 to do just that. The professors — all members of the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages — include Roy Chan, Fabienne Moore and Eleanor Paynter.
LINGUISTICS, EALL — Three faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences were inducted as Fellows into the premiere linguistics organization and a doctoral student receive an exclusive award for her research paper.
