In addition to advising within the Department of Comparative Literature, students have access to campus resources to help them prepare for careers, find internship opportunities, and apply for jobs.

Why Study Comparative Literature?

Graduates of Comparative Literature at the University of Oregon pursue a wide range of careers that draw on their strengths in critical and creative thinking, communication, cultural fluency, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
Many alumni continue into academic and research careers, entering PhD programs or working in higher education, where their training in theory, languages, and media provides a strong foundation. Others move into law, public policy, and international work, where the ability to analyze complex cultural and political contexts is essential.

A significant number of graduates build careers in media, publishing, and journalism, applying their expertise in narrative, interpretation, and writing across literary and digital platforms. The major also translates effectively into technology and creative industries, including roles in UX research and design, content strategy, communications, and digital media, where understanding how meaning works across platforms is increasingly valuable.

Students interested in cultural and public-facing work often pursue paths in museums, archives, arts administration, and nonprofit organizations, while others work in global business and nonprofit sectors that require strong cross-cultural communication and interpretive skills.

Across all of these fields, Comparative Literature graduates stand out for their ability to think across boundaries, engage diverse perspectives, and communicate complex ideas with clarity—skills that are highly adaptable and increasingly in demand.
