Internships

Want to gain a competitive edge in your future career? Internships can help you develop valuable job skills, gain practical work experience, and explore potential career paths—all while learning in a real-world environment. Develop your language skills, travel, grow professionally, and earn credits toward your major or minor through one of the many internship opportunities available to students in the Department of German and Scandinavian.

Fun with German Teaching

Our extremely successful Fun with German Teaching internship program with local schools has been running since 2003 for advanced students to raise awareness of German language, culture, and thought. It also prepares UO students for a teaching profession.

Each year, four UO students are hired as tour leaders for a combination of German- and English-speaking tours. After three weeks of paid training (sessions are offered April, May, June, and July), UO students are offered a start date for their first trip. Students need to pay for transportation to and from training sessions in Santa Rosa. If you’re interested, contact Matthias Vogel or Dorothee Ostmeier.

Fun with German Teaching Internship, German 409

Our extremely successful internship program “Fun with German” with local schools has been running since 2003 for advanced students to raise local awareness of German language, culture, and thought, and to prepare our students for a teaching profession.

In collaboration with Eugene public schools, the Department of German and Scandinavian is excited to offer a German-teaching internship program for dedicated undergraduate majors or minors in German who enjoy working with children and possess a high proficiency in the language. GER 409 students employ new and fun teaching approaches in settings from preschool through sixth grade and will act as GerScan ambassadors working towards our mission of promoting global citizenship across all curriculums.

The program runs through both winter and spring terms. To prepare for the assignment, students will receive preparatory training during the winter term, followed by 4-5 weeks of teaching during spring term, and around the sixth week students will present a report about their teaching experiences. Over two terms, students are expected to earn four total credits.

Course Information

This course counts towards German and Scandinavian major and minor programs as a language course, and also as credit towards the Second Language Teaching and Acquisition (SLAT) certificate.
