Want to accelerate your language skills while living and studying in another country? Global Education Oregon offers programs for the study of German and Scandinavian languages and cultures. You can live, study and travel in Germany, Austria, or Scandinavia.

Our department is committed to helping students study abroad in Europe by providing personalized academic and financial support. Credits typically transfer to UO, and some students can actually save money by spending a term abroad.

Need Funding to Study Abroad?

You should be a major (or double-major) in the German-Scandinavian department to apply for study abroad funding. Minors will also be considered. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are all welcome to apply. You can use financial aid in most cases for study abroad. Our scholarships are generally for $3,000 and are intended to help you cover program tuition and fees, airfare, housing, and incidentals. We plan to award 8-10 scholarships each year. Selections are made by a committee of German and Scandinavian department faculty.

How to apply:

  • Find a program you like—or simply ask us.
  • Write a 150-word statement of interest and send it in.
  • Ask at least one of your German or Swedish instructors to submit a recommendation.
  • We will follow up with you about eligibility, logistics, and fine-tuning your interests.

Deadlines:

  • Nov. 20 for spring programs
  • Jan. 20 for summer programs
  • March 1 for fall programs

Intensive German Language in Berlin

This program is focused on German language skill development. You will directly enroll in the Freie Universität of Berlin (FUBiS) summer program. FUBiS offers semi-intensive and intensive German language at five proficiency levels (A1 to C1), allowing you to improve your German skills considerably. Field trips to historic, cultural and political institutions are integral components of all classes. In addition, you will develop your intercultural communication skills as part of an international community of students from more than 50 countries studying in Berlin.

German Language and Culture in Berlin

In this program, you will be immersed in German language and culture. You will directly enroll in the Freie Universität of Berlin (FUBiS) summer program. Develop your intercultural communication skills by joining the international community of students from more than 50 countries that attends FUBiS every year. You have the option to live with a local family in a homestay and further your language skills. You will take one content course in English along with a German language course. Field trips to museums, memorials, and more are integral components of all classes.

DIS: Copenhagen

Study at a specialized Danish institution in the center of old Copenhagen. This program offers courses in a variety of academic disciplines, including architecture, biotechnology, politics, business, European studies, and related fields. Choose a core course from 28 academic programs and select from over 250 upper-level elective courses. Courses are taught in English by Danish faculty, and integrated study tours in and around Denmark are offered for all programs. With an emphasis on hands-on learning experiences, you have opportunities to simulate real-life scenarios, make connections, and build your resume.

DIS: Stockholm

Stockholm, a major city founded more than 700 years ago, combines old-world charm with the vibrant life of a modern European capital. Choose a core course from 11 academic programs and select from over 50 upper-level elective courses. All courses are taught in English. Areas of study include gender and sexuality, economics, international studies, literature, psychology, public health, political science, and Swedish language and culture. Courses are taught by Swedish and European faculty who are also practitioners in their fields, and courses include excursions and field trips in order to allow students to see the industry at work.

Internship Exchange Programs

Baden Wurttemberg

IE3: Baden-Württemberg Exchange Program

This program offers you the opportunity to improve your German proficiency and expand your academic horizons through courses at any one of fifteen partner universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Located in the southwest corner of Germany, Baden-Württemberg is home to some of the oldest, most renowned and prestigious universities in Germany.

Heidelberg

IE3: Heidelberg Accelerated Program (HAP)

This program is part of the longstanding Oregon and Baden-Württemberg state-to-state program. It is designed for students who have completed two terms (101 and 102) of first year German. Students earn the equivalent of the third term of first year German and all of second year German in one semester of intensive language study in beautiful Heidelberg.

GlobalWorks International Internships

This program, administered by Global Education Oregon (GEO), offers internship opportunities in a wide variety of industry sectors and locations around the world.

Exchange Programs

Students can enroll as an exchange student at a top international research institution for a semester (fall or fall/winter), spring quarter, full academic year, or summer term. Exchange students experience an immersive study abroad experience, living and learning with local students in their chosen city.
