Departmental Advising & Support

Undergraduate Advising & Support Services

On This Page:

The Department of Linguistics has a dedicated Director of Undergraduate Studies. This means our undergraduates get consistent advising, from a specific faculty member who has agreed to dedicate the time to guide you through our degree program.

Why study Linguistics? What’s required for a degree? It’s all summarized in our major/minor maps.

Individual Faculty Advising

You will find that making a strong academic connection with an individual faculty member or members is immensely useful to you as you develop your academic program and profile at the UO. An individual faculty advisor can discuss how you’re doing academically, give advice on courses to take and faculty to take them from, and write more than a perfunctory letter when you apply for jobs, graduate school, or professional school.

How do you go about getting an individual faculty advisor? Allow yourself to get immersed in your academic studies. Take advantage of the willingness of good faculty to work with students by going to office hours not just when you're having trouble with some material but when you're curious to learn more. All of us who are faculty enjoy and value the chance to work with committed students.

Schedule an Advising Appointment

Looking for in-depth information about your major or minor in Linguistics? If you have already declared a major, you can contact Don Daniels, Director of Undergraduate Studies. He can offer expertise about your major, as well as detailed information about your major department and its curricular and co-curricular offerings. Spike will assist you as you work to complete the major (or minor) in Linguistics. He can help you develop a concrete plan of study so that you get through the major smoothly, or help you identify courses that complement your major and the particular focus you want to develop within the major. We recommend that you connect with Spike each term, preferably far enough along in the term that you know how the term is going but soon enough that you can use the advising meeting to set up your next term.
