The Department of Romance Languages (RL) Scholarships are open to current undergraduate and graduate students who are declared majors or minors at the Department of Romance Languages at the time of application. All RL undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled full-time* (as defined by the UO) during the 2024/25 academic year in order to receive a scholarship award. *You are still considered a full-time UO student even if you are studying abroad.
This application is for scholarships that will be dispersed in Fall 2025. Please note you must be registered as a full-time student in the fall in order to receive these awards. Scholarships for summer study abroad will be awarded in Spring 2025.

Scholarship Requirements
The following criteria apply to all scholarship applications (additional criteria may apply to individual scholarships, as indicated).
All applications must include:
- A statement of purpose in applying for the scholarship (500-word limit). The statement should include personal qualifications, professional interest in the target language, and intended use of the scholarship.
- A current unofficial transcript (minimum requirement: 3.50 GPA in major/minor coursework, and 3.0 GPA overall).
- Undergraduate students: Two letters of recommendation from UO faculty members (please use departmental form; see below). One letter must be from a Romance Languages faculty member.
- Graduate students: One letter of recommendation from a UO faculty member (please use departmental form; see below).
For scholarships that support study abroad: Include a description of the Study Abroad program that you plan to attend. Documentation attesting acceptance into a program may be requested by the RL department.
For the Stickels Scholarship: Students will need to present documentation certifying registration and/or acceptance in a foreign university before their trip.
Financial aid: Scholarship awards may have an impact on your financial aid. Please check with the UO's Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships prior to accepting any scholarships.

Undergraduate Scholarships
Emmanuel Hatzantonis Scholarship
$2,000 scholarship to carry out Italian studies in Italy with a UO sponsored program. Open to majors or minors in Italian or Romance Languages.
Dr. Carl L Johnson Scholarship
$2,000 scholarship to assist one or more students with expenses related to attending the university, including but not limited to tuition, fees, books, miscellaneous supplies, room and board. Recipients will be selected based on the following criteria: Undergraduate student[s] in Romance Languages, with preference to those majoring in French; overall quality of academic work and achievement.
Helen Fe Jones Scholarship
$750 scholarship to study Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country. Open to juniors and seniors who are majors or minors in Spanish or Romance Languages.
Perry J. Powers Scholarship
$1,500 scholarship for study in the Romance Languages department. Open to all undergraduate majors and minors in the RL department.
Charles H. Stickels Scholarship
$2,000 scholarship to study at a university in a Spanish-speaking country. Open to graduate students of Romance Languages with a concentration in Spanish, expressing an intention to become language teachers. Preference given to those going to Mexico.
In the absence of graduate student applicants, undergraduates majoring in Spanish and intending to become language teachers will be considered. Undergraduates in the other Romance Languages intending to become language teachers may be considered in the absence of Spanish majors applying for this scholarship.
Additional Funding for Italian Majors/Minors
In addition to regular RL scholarships available to students of Italian, the Giustina Family Italian Fund provides a one-time scholarship to ALL Italian major/minors and RL majors with a 3.0 GPA or higher. To apply to these Italian scholarships, you do NOT need to submit a statement of purpose or letters of recommendation, just an unofficial UO transcript.
This application is for scholarships that will be dispersed in Fall of 2025. All Romance Language students must be enrolled full-time* (as defined by the UO) during the Fall and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) in order to receive a scholarship award.
Italian Major Scholarship
Award: $2,000
Eligibility: This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Italian majors enrolled in the UO and meet all requirements to be a student in good standing. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and earned at least 20-course credits toward the Italian major.
Italian Minor Scholarship
Award: $1,000
Eligibility: This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Italian minors enrolled in the UO and meet all requirements to be a student in good standing. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and earned at least 16-course credits toward the Italian minor.
RL Major with Italian Concentration as a First Language Scholarship
Award: $1,800
Eligibility: This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Romance Languages majors with Italian as a first language enrolled in the UO and meet all requirements to be a student in good standing. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and earned at least 16-course credits toward the RL major.
RL Major with Italian Concentration as a Second Language Scholarship
Award: $500
Eligibility: This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Romance Languages majors with Italian as a second language enrolled in the UO and meet all requirements to be a student in good standing. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and earned at least 8-course credits toward the RL major.
