When Damon Jones '84 was diagnosed with cancer, he was determined to make some dreams come true. One of those dreams was reviving "The Last Dragon," a stage production he was part of in his last year in the Theatre Department at University of Oregon. Through sheer determination he pulled together the majority of the original cast, and they are staging it live in Portland Aug. 8-10, 2024.

THEATRE ARTS - Jeanette deJong, associate professor of costume design, history and technology in the College of Arts and Sciences, brings decades of experience to the theatre arts. Whether leading a lecture or writing a book, deJong draws from her professional journey and offers methods and techniques that have been honed over the years.

CINEMA STUDIES - Dive into the art of producing with a hands-on immersive experience through the University of Oregon’s “The Art of Producing” Visiting Filmmaker Series 2024. Hear firsthand from the producer who brought “The Last of Us” to the screen, explore the craft of horror cinema and learn about a variety of possible careers in the film industry.

PHILOSOPHY - Cintia Martínez Velasco, an assistant professor of philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences, appears on an episode of UO Today, a production by the Oregon Humanities Center. Her research and teaching interests include feminist philosophy, gender theory, decolonial philosophy, and critical theory in Latin America.

THEATRE ARTS - A new set of lights at the University Theatre provides students with opportunities to work with the latest technology that is used in professional theaters. It's just one of many experiential learning opportunities that theatre students have at the College of Arts and Sciences.

CINEMA STUDIES, THEATRE ARTS - Built in the late 1800s, University and Villard halls haven't been state-of-the-art in a long time. But $68 million interior and exterior construction work is bringing new life to the two iconic University of Oregon buildings, which will host new facilities for the cinema studies and theatre arts departments.

ENGLISH, THEATRE ARTS - Alumna and Tony-nominated playwright Heidi Schreck (English, theatre arts, '09) is collaborating with director Lila Neugebauer to stage a production of Uncle Vanya at the Lincoln Center Theatre in April. The play, originally written in 1897, will star Steve Carell and Alison Pill.

THEATRE ARTS - Costumes are an essential element in transporting audiences to a whole new world. The Department of Theater Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences provides experiential learning opportunities for students, teaching them industry standards in costuming, to prepare them for internships and careers in the theatre world. THEATRE ARTS - In a theater production class, Grigorii Malakhov discovered a new passion that has taken him to a world-renowned opera company in Santa Fe and is preparing him for a career after graduation. Plus, take a tour of the UO Costume Shop with junior Annika McNair as students prepare for their production of Antigone, which ran in the 2024 winter term.

CLASSICS, THEATRE ARTS - Directed by Tara Wibrew, the University Theatre’s production of Antigone opens March 1 and runs through March 17. The production is a product of College of Arts and Sciences students’ hands-on learning, applying concepts learned in classrooms to the stage in Robinson Theatre on the Eugene campus.

ENGLISH, SOCIOLOGY, SPANISH, THEATRE ARTS - The Distinguished Teaching Awards recognize exceptional teaching that is inclusive, engaged and research-informed. This year’s winners are Jocelyn Hollander, Faith Barter, Alex Zunterstein, Kirby Brown, Robin Hopkins, Tannaz Farsi, Patricia Rodley and Michael Moffitt.

THEATRE ARTS - An original musical play created by and starring Lane County and University of Oregon student disability communities. The play is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Hope Theatre. The event is free, first come first served.

THEATRE ARTS - On Thursday, May 25, around 450 UO students and recent graduates presenting their projects at the Undergraduate Research Symposium. The annual event showcases student research across all academic fields; 67 majors across all the UO’s schools and colleges will be represented.

THEATRE ARTS - The University Theater wraps up its 2022-23 season with Shakespeare's comedy classic 'Twelfth Night.' “The comic happenstances in ‘Twelfth Night’ seem to me married to why we need comedy in the first place,” said director John Schmor.

THEATRE ARTS - Although schools had been desegregated since the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, the law had been largely ignored in Durham, North Carolina — until 1971, when a Black community activist and a Klansman were thrown together to find a solution. The stage is the setting for their epic confrontation in University Theatre’s upcoming production “The Best of Enemies.”
